Nigeria is one of the most famous countries in Africa. It is referred to as the Giant of Africa because it has the largest population, largest economy, and a wide range of mind blowing tourist attractions. The Northern part of Nigeria comprises three zones out of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. It accounts for the highest population and landmass of the country and there is a fallacious assertion that the region is only riddle with civic unrest and terror. However, if you are opportune to take a trip to Northern Nigeria, you will see that there is so much more to northern Nigerian than violence as there exists hundreds of locations that attract tourists from far and near. Some of the popular tourist attractions include The Ancient Kano Walls, Aso Rock, Yankari National Park, Kainji Dam, Gashaka-Gumti National Park, Zuma Rock, Biu Plateau, Gurara Water Falls, Mambilla Plateau, and Queen Amina Statue. While you may have read or visited some of these popular beautiful tourist sites, there are several other destinations that you may have neverimagined to be in existence. In this article, I present to you some eye-popping tourist attractions you may not know exist in Northern Nigeria.

Kajuru Castle: Kajuru castle is probably the only luxurious villa that you can find on a mountain top styled aesthetically. It is located in a village named Kajuru in Kaduna State. The Kajuru Castle was built between the years 1981 and 1989 by a German expatriate. The Kajuru castle is an absolutely gorgeous masterpiece that can accommodate about 150 guests. It has complete suits of armor, a swimming pool, a grilling spot, a sauna, a beautiful garden and a dungeon-like room. The Kajuru Castle is a sight to behold as it is surrounded by greenery, rocks and mountains. It is a lovely place to visit if you want to experience serenity with a blend of nature and modern leisure.

Matsirga Falls: Almost every part of Northern Nigeria is endowed with one or two beautiful waterfalls that are perfect destinations for one to experience serenity and the aesthetics of nature. Even though only a few of them are well known by tourists. These include the Gurara Falls in Niger State, Farin Ruwa WaterFalls in Nasarawa State, Osome Falls in Kogi State, Yadin WaterFall in Adamawa State, Kurra Falls in Plateau State, Mambilla and Barup WaterFalls in Taraba State, etc. However, the Matsirga Falls in Kafanchan, Kaduna State is a unique waterfall with an eye-popping sight to behold. The waterfall has its source from the springs of water above Kagoro hills. It is a combination of four different hollows of about 25 meters of rock cliff forming a large pool beneath. At the point of impact with the river, the cascading showers of the fall create a mist which looks like a rainbow and it seems to disappear and appear.

Birnin Kudu Rock Art : If you are a fan of arts and colors, then you would probably be more fascinated and blown away to see several colorful paintings on rocks. The Birnin Kudu Rock Art is located in Jigawa State (North-Western Nigeria) and it portrays various images of animals such as cattle and sheep that are probably extinct by now. It also portrays geometric signs and these depictions are believed to be associated with shamanic practices. The Birnin Kudu Rock Art is one of the oldest rock paintings in Nigeria, in fact some parts of the rock art sites are still recognized today as sacred sites.

Lamurde Hot Springs (Kwanan Ruwan Zafi): “Ruwan Zafi” is an Hausa term meaning “Hot Water” and has been used to describe the wonderful occurrence of the earth pushing out hot water in the Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State.Unlike the Ikogosi Warm Springs, a tourist attraction in South-Western part of Nigeria where where a cold spring meets a warm spring at confluence with each of the duo maintaining its thermal properties, the Lamurde Hot Spring is a spring of boiling water that can be as hot as the boiled water from your electric kettle. One of the interesting things about this spring is that the hot water does not steam but you can hear it rumble out of the ground. The people of this village strongly believe till date that the hot water from this spring is therapeutic. This should be one of the wonders of the world and I hope the location would be beautified someday to attract more tourists.
